Accountants – Are you showing your “Soft Side”?

As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, having a strong set of soft skills is becoming increasingly important for job seekers in the Chartered Accounting space. Like any successful first date, forming a personal connection and demonstrating your more human qualities with your prospective employer can determine the outcome of your relationship from the get-go. So… Accountants – are you ready to tap into your “soft side”?

Soft skills, also known as interpersonal or professional skills, are the personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.
In the Chartered Accounting space, some of the key soft skills that employers are looking for include:

Communication: Being able to clearly and effectively communicate with clients, colleagues, and management is crucial in the Chartered Accounting field. This includes both verbal and written communication, as well as the ability to present complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.

Time management: Chartered Accountants are often required to juggle multiple tasks and projects at once, making time management an essential skill. Employers look for candidates who can prioritize their workload, meet deadlines, and work efficiently.

Problem-solving: You will often be faced with complex financial problems that require innovative solutions. Employers are looking for candidates who can think critically and analyse problems to find the best course of action.

Attention to detail: The Chartered Accounting field requires a high level of attention to detail, as even small mistakes can have significant consequences. Employers are looking for candidates who are meticulous and thorough in their work.

Teamwork: Chartered Accountants often work in teams, and employers are looking for candidates who can collaborate effectively with others. This includes the ability to listen to others, give and receive feedback, and work towards a common goal.

Adaptability: The Chartered Accounting field is constantly evolving, and employers are looking for candidates who can adapt to new technologies, regulations and methodologies.

Leadership: Chartered Accountants are often in a position to guide and mentor others, and employers are looking for candidates who can lead by example and inspire others.

To be successful in the Chartered Accounting field (or the dating sphere, at that), it is important to have a strong set of soft skills. These skills will help you to communicate effectively, manage your time, solve problems, pay attention to detail, work in a team, adapt to change, and lead others. By highlighting these skills in your resume, during interviews, or more generally in the workplace, you can demonstrate to potential employers that you have what it takes to excel in this space.

You’ve mastered your soft skills… What now?

Here are some other soft skills that are consistently being sought after by employers in the market:

The ability to think strategically. This includes the ability to identify long-term goals and develop plans to achieve them, as well as the ability to anticipate future trends and developments in the industry.

Technology is becoming more frequently utilised & prominent in the Chartered Accounting field so possessing the ability to work with and understand technology is becoming an important skill. As technology continues to advance, Chartered Accountants are expected to be familiar with and able to use various software and tools to perform their tasks.

It is equally as important for Chartered Accountants to possess a strong ethical compass. This includes being honest, transparent and accountable for their actions, as well as being committed to maintaining the highest level of integrity and professionalism in all their work.
